Naked Roommate, the Oakland outfit, crafts synth-heavy punk that merges dancefloor momentum with either explosive high-velocity force or stark, fragmented restraint. What began chiefly as an abstract side endeavor among players from the local punk unit the World reached full realization once that group dissolved in January 2020. The newly independent project moved swiftly into skeletal drum-machine rhythms and shadowy no-wave textures for its first long-player, Do the Duvet, issued later the same year, then returned with the comparably frenetic Pass the Loofah after a four-year interval.

Amber Sermeńo and Andy Jordan originated the Naked Roommate idea in 2018 while both were still active in the funky post-punk five-piece the World. Following the World’s breakup, the pair redirected their complete attention to the new venture, initially working as a duo before recruiting bassist Alejandra Alcala and multi-instrumentalist Michael Zamora to expand the sonic palette. As a solidified quartet, Naked Roommate captured its debut album, Do the Duvet, which fused jagged no-wave punk impulses with icy electronic arrangements; Trouble in Mind and Upset the Rhythm co-released the record in September 2020. Four years afterward, an augmented lineup issued the follow-up Pass the Loofah, incorporating horn charts from saxophonists Geoff Saba and Jeanne Oss alongside a markedly increased percussion presence that underscored the group’s longstanding debt to foundational dance-punk ensembles such as ESG and the broader 99 Records roster.
