Biography
Originating from Florida’s sun-drenched shores, vocalist and composer Muni Long progressed from filming personal performances inside her bedroom to earning acclaim both onstage and as a behind-the-scenes hitmaker. The Vero Beach native cultivated a substantial digital following through self-produced clips that showcased her vocal and songwriting gifts, prompting a joint recording contract with Power Entertainment and Capitol Records. That deal yielded the upbeat dance-pop album Jukebox, released in December 2009 after the March digital EP Hello My Apple, alongside songwriting credits on tracks for Rihanna (“California King Bed”), Fifth Harmony (“Worth It”), and Kesha (“Timber”). After a period of reduced solo activity, she resurfaced in 2018 with the Thirty Tigers-issued Coloured, a collection steeped in emotionally seasoned R&B that incorporated subtle country and gospel accents. Subsequent output has centered on sleek contemporary R&B, including multiple EPs and the Def Jam-supported full-length Public Displays of Affection: The Album (2022), anchored by the platinum-certified, Grammy-winning single “Hrs & Hrs.”
Muni Long entered the world in Vero Beach, Florida, on September 14, 1988. With a father serving in the Navy, the household relocated often during her childhood. She began singing at age two and participated actively in school choirs and theatrical productions; upon receiving a guitar from her father during her senior year, she taught herself to play and started composing original material. Eager to reach listeners, she uploaded bedroom renditions of her songs, amassing 30,000 subscribers and more than 1.2 million views while inspiring other vocalists to post their own interpretations. Her 2007 appearance on MTV’s Say What? Karaoke generated industry attention that secured the Capitol deal. Although Jukebox received favorable notices, modest sales led her to pause her recording career. Prior to that album’s arrival, however, her co-written “Here I Am” appeared on Girlicious’s debut, after which she supplied material for Cheryl Cole and Rihanna. Between 2011 and 2017 her compositions were recorded by Madonna, Mary J. Blige, Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Mariah Carey, Pitbull, Train, and numerous additional artists. While her songwriting career flourished, she also navigated the dissolution of an earlier management agreement.
Regaining full creative control, Long independently issued the 2018 singles “Gentle Hands” and “Heavenly,” the opening tracks from Coloured, a deeply personal R&B album released that June. She subsequently founded her own imprint, Supergiant. From 2020 to 2022 she issued a series of polished contemporary R&B projects—the EPs Black Like This, Nobody Knows, Public Displays of Affection, and Public Displays of Affection Too—alongside assorted singles, securing a Def Jam licensing arrangement in the process. The sultry ballad “Hrs & Hrs” emerged as her most successful headlining release, attaining platinum status in April 2022. That September she consolidated and expanded the Public Displays material into the album of the same name. At the 65th Annual Grammy Awards in 2023, “Hrs & Hrs” received the award for Best R&B Performance. Later that year she delivered the Top 20 single “Made for Me.”
