In 1980 Guy LeBlanc, Mark Spénard, and Don Prince—each previously a member of Delerium—joined forces with Dan Lacasse, giving rise to Nathan Mahl. The ensemble issued its debut recording, Parallel Eccentricities, in 1983 and thereby presented its interpretation of progressive rock. Lacasse exited the lineup shortly afterward and Wayne Palmer took his place. That configuration remained intact until the following year, at which point the band dissolved. A new roster reassembled the project in 1989. For an extended stretch Nathan Mahl operated in shifting formations and concentrated on fusion-oriented material. The Clever Use of Shadows appeared in 1999 and signaled a return to the group’s foundational progressive-rock approach. The next year brought the follow-up release Heretik, Vol. 1: Body of Accusations.
