Nemesis emerged as an outlier during the late 1980s and early 1990s, a Texas-rooted rap act aligned with major labels at a moment when the genre was overwhelmingly anchored in Los Angeles and New York. Big Al, the Snake, and MC Azimv comprised the lineup; the trio achieved modest sales and exerted minimal influence yet foreshadowed later developments. They fused distinct regional approaches of the period—New York MCing, Miami bass beats, and West Coast gangsta attitude—though their productions drew the strongest notice, a fact underscored by the bass-centric album titles they chose. Profile Records issued the group’s first project, To Hell and Back, in 1989; two years later came Munchies for Your Bass. Widely regarded as their finest work, that 1991 release largely set aside the New York-style MCing that had earlier dominated, shifting instead toward Southern party rap. Subsequent efforts saw these party-focused lyrics grow increasingly generic, after which Nemesis receded from view. In a surprising turn, the collective resurfaced late in 2000 with the independent Munchies for Your Bass, Da Return, whose artwork echoed No Limit releases. The project attracted scant attention, underscoring that the group’s brief period of visibility had already closed, leaving behind scant enduring impact.
