Biography
Richmond, Virginia serves as the base for emcee and producer Nickelus F, whose strengths lie in both spontaneous freestyle delivery and intricate verses that probe personal depths. Across an expansive catalog of dozens of projects, his output shifts from the raw textures of early mixtapes such as 2004's B Stands for Burglars to the more reflective tone of 2018's Stuck. Although he received early coverage from The Source and BET plus featured on initial Drake releases, Nickelus has maintained an independent route away from major-label channels. Within Richmond's Association of Great Minds (AGM) collective he works alongside Radio B, Michael Millions, and producer Namebrand, while also linking with local peers Shawn Kemp (aka Lil Ugly Mane) and Ohbliv.
Born in Portland, Oregon, Nickelus relocated repeatedly in childhood because his father served in the military. After time spent in Berlin, Germany and multiple U.S. cities, the family established roots in Richmond. He began rapping in sixth grade, originally under the name Nick Fury, and earned his first industry notice in 2000 at age seventeen by finishing second in The Source Unsigned Hype Emcee Battle. Mixtapes soon followed, among them B Stands for Burglars (2004) and Cut the Check (2005). Early in Drake's career the two connected, with Nickelus appearing on Room for Improvement (2006) and Comeback Season (2007); Drake later cited him as a lyricist he admired. In 2007 Nickelus won seven consecutive “Freestyle Friday” contests on BET's 106 & Park and was inducted into the segment's Hall of Fame that same year.
He maintained a steady release schedule with projects including 2008's For the F of It and 2009's Heathen, Go Time, and R.A.R.E. (Reliving a Real Experience), the last built on Portishead instrumentals. That year Complex also placed him on its “Underrated New Rappers” list even though he had already spent nearly a decade recording. Further mixtapes arrived such as Season Premiere (2010), Faces (2011), Vices (2013), and two Yellow Gold volumes recorded with Ohbliv. In 2015 he issued the collaborative Trick Dice under Shawn Kemp's alias Lil Ugly Mane; Nickelus noted the cassette sold out within an hour. Stretch Marks, a joint effort with AGM's Namebrand, surfaced in 2016. After completing his degree at Virginia Commonwealth University and welcoming twin daughters, he delivered the introspective Stuck in 2018. Two volumes of previously unreleased material, The Gold Mine Vol. 1 and 2, followed in 2019.
