Biography
Noah Thompson, a contemporary country performer, first gained widespread attention by claiming victory in Season 20 of American Idol. His initial single, “One Day Tonight,” drawn from the 2023 EP Middle of God Knows Where, reached the Top 50 on the Hot Country Songs Chart, and he followed with the 2024 release “Upbringing.”
Born April 18, 2002, in Louisa, Kentucky, Thompson received his earliest musical instruction from his father, who showed him guitar fundamentals. During his teenage years he uploaded country-song covers to social media while holding a construction job, and a friend ultimately persuaded him to try out for American Idol. He earned a spot on the program with his audition performance of Kameron Marlowe’s “Giving You Up.” Viewers connected with his modest, “aw shucks” persona and country-inflected voice as he interpreted material by Harry Styles, Ben E. King, John Mayer, Fleetwood Mac, and additional artists. On the May 22, 2022 finale, where he delivered Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire,” Thompson was named the season’s winner and promptly issued “One Day Tonight.” The track entered the Top 50 of Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart and opened the door for his debut EP, Middle of God Knows Where, which appeared in June 2023.
