Biography
Omar Cunningham ranks among the leading independent figures in Southern soul across the 2000s and 2010s, delivering vocals that combine smoothness with power while also establishing himself as a skilled songwriter. Born in Gadsden, Alabama, he first gained traction as a member of Daybreak before collaborating with acts as varied as Duice and Cameo. Those experiences preceded his initial solo outing, Hell at the House, which appeared in 2003 and climbed to number 53 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Although that album marked his highest commercial placement, Cunningham continued to assemble a consistent body of solo recordings that resonated with mature listeners drawn to classic-style R&B. In his parallel role as a songwriter for others, he scored a charting single with Willie Clayton’s “We Both Grown” in 2010 and contributed to projects by fellow Southern artists Karen Wolfe, Vick Allen, Bigg Robb, and Lenny Williams.
