Biography
Originating from Wellington, New Zealand, Orchestra of Spheres functions as a broad collective whose sound merges international influences and genres, spanning disco with electro, kuduro alongside mbalax, neo-psych joined to no wave, and kosmiche blended into prog, executed on both standard and hand-built instruments. The members assume eccentric aliases while wearing equally extravagant outfits, and their shows and recordings feature collective affectionate improvisations together with tranquil, lighthearted rhythmic chants. Nonagonic Now marked their first full-length release in 2010, after which shifting personnel and stylistic explorations shaped later projects that include Brothers and Sisters of the Black Lagoon from 2016 and Mirror in 2018.
The collective assembled during the early, energetic period of Wellington’s artist group the Frederick Street Sound and Light Exploration Society in 2009. Initial participants were Baba Rossa on biscuit-tin guitar and sexomouse marimba, Zye Sosceles playing electric carillon, Jemi Hemi Mandala on drums, and Mos Iocoss covering keyboards and gamelan. Their independently issued EP Space Art Music came out that year, ahead of the full-length Nonagonic Now in 2010. The Bad Spheres single followed in March 2011, and the Numbers EP arrived in June. Fire Records from the U.K. signed them and issued a re-release of Nonagonic Now later that year. An extended phase of touring and recording came next, during which EtonalE joined on bass carillon and percussion. Fire brought out Vibration Animal Sex Brain Music in December 2013.
In 2016 the group delivered its third album, Brothers and Sisters of the Black Lagoon, which included featured drumming by Tooth while Woild Boin mixed the sessions and added contributions. With percussionist Farmerboy and additional guest musicians, Orchestra of Spheres tracked its fourth full-length Mirror, released by Fire in 2018.
