Biography
Known for lush vocal harmonies, Overcoats crafts indie pop that weaves in threads of electro-pop, folk, and indie rock. The pair consists of Hana Rose Elion and JJ Mitchell, who issued their first full-length album, Young, in 2017. Their follow-up, the bolder and more empowerment-focused The Fight, surfaced in 2020, while Winner from 2023 adopted a quieter, introspective stance shaped by personal setbacks and change.
The New York-based act formed when Elion and Mitchell, former college roommates who both graduated from Wesleyan University, prepared to issue their self-titled EP in 2015. Early attention earned them festival bookings plus opening slots alongside SOAK, Maggie Rogers, and Tennis. Around the arrival of Young they launched a headlining tour. Co-produced by Nicolas Vernhes (Dirty Projectors, Daughter) and Autre Ne Veut, the record came out on Arts & Crafts in April 2017 and reached the Top 40 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart.
For the next album Overcoats worked with producers Justin Raisen (Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira, Angel Olsen) and Yves Rothman (Miya Folick, Nasty Cherry). They had switched to the Loma Vista imprint, which released the streamlined and more confident The Fight in March 2020. After experiencing losses and disruptions that encompassed the COVID-19 pandemic, the duo returned with Winner in April 2023 on Never Fall Back Records/Thirty Tigers, favoring a contemplative approach.
