In the 1990s, Andy C and Ant Miles—previously recording as Origin Unknown—had already produced a collection of drum'n'bass classics while running Ram Recordings. They then partnered with fellow Ram artist Shimon to establish Ram Trilogy. The newly formed unit marked its arrival by releasing three major singles across the second half of 1998, beginning with the hard-hitting pair "No Reality/Scanners," then "Mind Overload/Intercity," and finally "Chase Scene/Terminal 1." Although each track adopted the darkstep approach that was spreading widely across the jungle scene, a direction Origin Unknown had helped originate, the productions pushed the style ahead through an array of advanced rhythms and sonic textures. Twelve months afterward, the group, known for keeping a low media profile, surfaced with Molten Beats, the first album Ram Recordings had ever issued.
