Formed in 1995 by Karen Kardell on vocals and the_Gun handling keyboards and programming, the Razor Skyline built its early identity around intricate, layered songcraft that emphasized atmosphere and density. Although rooted in the melodic gloom of 1980s acts such as the Cure and Siouxie & the Banshees, the project moved past straightforward gothic revival by folding in electronic textures and metallic shimmer. The pair captured their first demo toward the close of 1995 and secured a contract with COP International before the year ended. Their debut full-length, Journal of Trauma, arrived in 1996, quickly gaining wide attention and sharpening the duo’s sonic direction. To support the record they mounted an extensive West Coast tour, expanding the lineup with additional musicians for the stage shows. Once the touring cycle concluded, Kardell stepped away amid personal disagreements, prompting Charlotte Shai to assume vocal duties. Kardell returned in 1998, resulting in Shai’s exit, and the reunited core then tracked their sophomore effort, Fade and Sustain, issued the following year. Shortly afterward, drummer Onyx became a permanent member, converting the Razor Skyline into a trio. The group’s third album, The Bitter Well, appeared in 2001.
