Ruben Romero stands out as a masterful player of the acoustic guitar whose work unites the flamenco heritage of Spain with an expansive array of other musical traditions. Beyond his solo recitals, he has taken the stage alongside the Denver Symphony and the Minnesota Orchestra while joining Native American flute player R. Carlos Nakai for the album Flamenco Southwest, which merges flamenco with Native American elements. PBS broadcast the documentary video Simple Treasures that chronicles Romero’s life and artistry. His late older brother Vicente Romero, a flamenco dancer, provided the initial spark that led him to pursue flamenco guitar studies in Spain, where his deep appreciation for the musical customs of his gypsy forebears supplied further creative impetus. He has also maintained an ongoing partnership with flamenco dancer Lydia Torea.
