London-based electro producer Russ Chimes, tied to the French collective Valerie, built his profile toward the end of the 2000s through a series of remixes that circulated widely across music blogs. Drawing from ’80s synth funk exemplified by Prince, he received his initial boost when the influential MP3 blog Discodust featured him in July 2007. That site highlighted several of his early tracks—“Afterburner,” “Mulsanne,” and “She’s Got the Heat”—before spotlighting additional remixes he had completed. His reworkings of Sam Sparro’s “Black & Gold” and Chromeo’s “Fancy Footwork” drew widespread notice throughout 2008. Further remixes arrived the following year, encompassing Frankmusik’s “Confusion Girl,” Marina & the Diamonds’ “Mowgli’s Road,” and the Outrunners’ “These Girls Are Dressed to Kill.” His most widely circulated effort proved to be the 2010 treatment of up-and-coming English singer/songwriter Ellie Goulding’s smash hit “Starry Eyed.” Around the same period he formally aligned with Valerie, contributing the track “Daytona” to the 2009 various-artists compilation Valerie and Friends. He simultaneously cultivated a reputation as a DJ by circulating electro mixes online.
