Biography
Ryan Tedder first gained widespread recognition fronting the pop group OneRepublic, yet he had already spent years writing songs and producing tracks for numerous major acts. He entered the world in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1979 and spent his formative years in Colorado, where the Suzuki method introduced him to instrumental playing. While still in high school he had begun composing material and mastering several instruments. Following his time at Oral Roberts University he settled briefly in Nashville and then New York, ultimately accepting an invitation to join the team of hip-hop producer Timbaland, who soon mentored him directly. Before stepping forward as OneRepublic’s lead vocalist in 2007, Tedder had already supplied material to Natasha Bedingfield, Jennifer Lopez, Hilary Duff, and Leona Lewis.
In 2002 he returned to Colorado and renewed his acquaintance with high-school classmate and guitarist Zach Filkins. The pair moved to Los Angeles the following year and launched OneRepublic. After an initial major-label arrangement collapsed, Timbaland placed the group on his Mosley Music Group imprint and supplied the remix of “Apologize” that became the band’s breakthrough single. When the debut album Dreaming Out Loud appeared in November 2007, that track had already established a North American benchmark for the greatest volume of radio airplay within a single week. Tedder has since balanced OneRepublic’s live commitments with continued production work for other artists.
