Biography
Championed by BBC DJ Gilles Peterson along with respected producer Diplo, Baltimore rapper Rye Rye surfaced during 2008 with an effervescent style and backing from M.I.A. At just seventeen, a rap she left on DJ Blaqstarr’s answering machine sparked a collaboration that introduced her to the Mad Decent label/studio/family. This connection quickly yielded a guest spot on the remix of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” as well as Diplo’s “Wassup Wassup.” She next joined M.I.A.’s imprint N.E.E.T., where she issued her debut solo cut, “Shake It to the Ground.” By late 2008 she also featured on electro producer Adrian Lux’s remix of “Strawberry” and the Count & Sinden single “Hardcore Girls.” Early 2009 brought an appearance on the Fast & Furious soundtrack via the track “Bang,” while 2010 included tours alongside M.I.A. and Die Antwoord plus a video for the fresh single “Sunshine.” With assistance from producers Blaqstarr, Diplo, Count & Sinden, and M.I.A., Rye Rye completed her long-awaited debut, Go! Pop! Bang!, by year’s end, setting a release for early 2011.
