Sam Means, a singer and songwriter celebrated for his knack at creating infectious pop material, sharpened those abilities while teaming with Nate Ruess in the Arizona indie pop group the Format. Following Ruess’s 2008 exit to launch the Grammy-winning project Fun., Means redirected his energies toward family life yet stayed active in music by launching a band merchandise firm and composing the score for the independent feature The Sinking of Santa Isabel. He notched a modest chart success with “Yeah Yeah” on the film’s soundtrack and delivered several 7-inch singles plus EPs, though a full six years elapsed before his debut album appeared. Teaming once more with former the Format colleagues Don Raymond, Jr. (bass), Marko Buzard (guitar), and John O’Reilly, Jr. (drums), Means cut his first studio long-player, 10 Songs, under producer Steven McDonald (Redd Kross) in Los Angeles and issued it independently in early 2016.
