Sarah Hudson channels brash rebellion and introspection through guitar-driven angst-pop that draws varied listeners, though her primary audience remains teenagers. Those same teens may recognize her cousin, actress Kate Hudson, while their parents likely recall her father, Hudson Brothers member Mark Hudson. Raised in Bel Air, CA, sporting a purple Mohawk, Hudson consistently found herself positioned as an outsider. After finishing high school she composed numerous songs, which led to a recording contract with S-Curve/EMI in 2004. Visibility increased when PBS news program Frontline aired the episode “The Way the Music Died,” featuring Hudson and her father discussing the music industry’s frequent setbacks. One month afterward her debut album, Naked Truth, reached stores, and she subsequently joined the Rock the Vote Bus Tour for a cross-country run.
