Saratoga came together as a Spanish outfit in 1992 and soon earned recognition as Madrid’s foremost heavy metal ensemble, building a following that stretched across Europe and Japan. Three years of songwriting and preparation after their formation led to the 1995 release of their self-titled debut album. Although it enjoyed only modest initial sales, Saratoga later acquired the status of a Euro-metal classic, finding admirers throughout the continent and in Japan. The band next issued Tributo, a set of cover recordings that presented their preferred material by Spanish songwriters including Antonio Flores and Ángeles del Infierno. Wider public notice arrived with the follow-up album Mi Ciudad, which entered national pop rankings such as Lista de Afive—an uncommon achievement for a heavy metal act. Motivated to move past genre boundaries, Saratoga then delivered Vientos de Guerra, an album crafted for mainstream listeners. Their attempt to reach the global heavy metal audience through the English-language album Heaven’s Gate did not succeed. The group soon returned to its core European and Japanese supporters with the album Las Puertas del Cielo and the DVD A Morir. Their biographical DVD 1992-2004 marked the next significant achievement, attaining gold status through sales. The subsequent release Tierra de Lobos matched this success and opened opportunities for European touring. Later albums such as El Clan de la Lucha and VII maintained steady positions on European sales and airplay charts.
