Biography
Scared of Chaka, a garage punk-pop trio hailing from Albuquerque, came together in 1993 with guitarist and vocalist Dave Yanul Hernandez, bassist Dameon Waggoner, and drummer Ron Skrasek at the helm. Their fast-paced, witty sound, drawing influence from the Dickies, first appeared on the 1995 release Hutch Brown Sayngwich via the 702 label. The following year brought the more measured Scared of Chaka, after which the group moved to eMpTy Records and issued the well-liked Masonic Youth within months. In 1998, How to Lose came out, succeeded the next year by Tired of You on Sub City. The summer of 2001 saw the arrival of Crossing with Switchblades through Hopeless, marking the end of the band's run. Afterward, Hernandez established Broadcast Oblivion in 2002 and later played bass alongside longtime indie pop associates in the Shins, a group that had earlier included both him and Skrasek in one of its initial lineups.
