Biography
While pursuing physical education studies in Mexico City, Mexican singer and songwriter Sergio Esquivel first immersed himself in music by crafting lyrics after dark, fueled by memories of the relatives he had left behind. His debut effort took shape as the ballad “Rocio,” written expressly for his sister. After returning to Yucatán, he took up daytime employment while appearing onstage at night. In 1968 Esquivel joined Ramón Triay to form a short-lived duet. Not long afterward he relocated once more to Mexico City, where he devoted himself to formal musical training and the groundwork for a solo career. At the 1971 Mexican First International Popular Song Festival he placed third, later appearing at major Latin events such as the Viña del Mar and OTI festivals.
