S'Express stood among the earliest acts to guide Britain's electronic dance music scene out of its club roots and into broad commercial visibility. The project originated with London-born producer and DJ Mark Moore. In 1983 Moore launched his public profile by spinning at Philip Salon's Mud Club, quickly becoming a regular whose sets held the room for the next five years. He soon added regular nights at Heaven and Shroom, where his selections helped introduce Chicago house and Detroit techno to British audiences.

Moore stepped into recording in 1988 by launching S'Express alongside producer and songwriter Pascal Gabriel. Their opening release, the house-flavored single "Theme from S'Express," constructed its groove from samples, most prominently Rose Royce's "Is It Love You're After" and TZ's "I Got the Hots for You." The track climbed to number one on the U.K. pop chart, secured an appearance on Top of the Pops, registered strong sales across Europe and Australia, and found favor in American clubs.

As one of the first U.K. house productions to cross into the mainstream, the hit led Moore and Gabriel to record the 1989 album Original Soundtrack. In addition to the debut single, the LP yielded two further British Top Ten hits, "Superfly Guy" and "Hey Music Lover." While several additional musicians received credit on that album, the 1990 follow-up Intercourse listed only DJ Sonique alongside Moore. Its three singles—"Mantra for a State of Mind," "Nothing to Lose," and "Find 'Em, Fool 'Em, Forget 'Em"—failed to replicate the earlier commercial impact. After Moore and Sonique parted, the only further activity under the S'Express name for some time was a 1996 remix of "Theme from S'Express" that re-entered the charts.

Moore revived the moniker in 2006 for the standalone single "Stupid Little Girls." By then he had built a parallel career as a producer, remixer, club owner, and label head, remaining one of Britain's most sought-after club DJs. In 2016 he again reactivated S'Express for the remix album Enjoy This Trip, which presented updated versions of classic tracks reworked by Horse Meat Disco, Kamp!, Punks Jump Up, Chris & Cosey, and others.
