Biography
The essence of hardcore rapper Shade Sheist, from his delivery to the instrumentals supporting his rhymes, projects an unmistakable West Coast identity. Though he has occasionally collaborated with East Coast figures such as Ja Rule and Naughty by Nature member Kay Gee, Sheist remains rooted in the Southern California rap environment. His style draws heavily from West Coast gangsta artists including Snoop Doggy Dogg, DJ Quik, Warren G, Dr. Dre, and the late N.W.A. agitator Eazy-E; born and raised in the Los Angeles area, he entered the world in the early 1980s. This timeline placed him as an infant during the peak popularity of pioneering old-school East Coast acts like Kurtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, the Sugarhill Gang (known for "Rappers Delight"), and the Treacherous Three, and positioned him at just two or three years old when Ice-T, the foundational figure of West Coast gangsta rap, began recording in 1983.
Inglewood, CA (site of the Inglewood Forum) and South Central L.A. formed the backdrop of his upbringing, where rap remained a constant presence. While familiar with MCs from the East Coast and the Deep South, the West Coast exerted the strongest shaping force on his lyrics and cadence. During his youth in the neighborhood through the 1980s and 1990s, the pervasive gang violence and the Crips/Bloods conflict in South Central L.A. registered clearly, yet he has stated that he possessed the foresight to steer clear of involvement in that world. Breakthrough opportunities arrived in 2000, when he appeared on "If You Were My Bitch," one of the tracks Irv Gotti produced for the release Irv Gotti Presents: The Murderers. That project introduced him to Ja Rule, who in turn enlisted him as a guest on the Def Jam album Rule 3:36, certified triple platinum. The same year brought an introduction to L.A.-based producer Damizza, then serving as senior director of artist relations at urban contemporary station Power 106 while operating his own Baby Ree Entertainment production company and label. Damizza subsequently included Sheist on the 2000 single "Where I Wanna Be," featured on the compilation Damizza Presents: Where I Wanna Be.
Baby Ree/MCA issued Sheist's debut full-length solo project, Informal Introduction, in September 2002. The album's production roster encompasses Damizza alongside DJ Quik and Naughty by Nature's Kay Gee, whose East Coast roots contribute to a set that otherwise maintains a distinctly West Coast sonic character.
