Too Short first spotted the potential in Spice 1, a Texas native who had relocated to California. The rapper’s debut album stood out for its intense, grim portrayal of gangsta life, further darkened by his sharp, furious, and bleak vocal delivery. In 1993 he delivered an even harsher follow-up, 187 He Wrote, which incorporated sounds of gunfire. Additional projects arrived in the form of 1990 Sick in 1995 and Black Bossalini (aka Dr. Bomb From Da Bay) in 1997. Immortalized appeared two years after that, while Last Dance and Playa Rich Project marked his return in spring 2000. A sequel to the latter project surfaced in 2002, and Spiceberg Slim arrived that same summer. Despite the rapid succession of albums, Spice 1 avoided the critical backlash that often greets such output. He adapted to shifting trends, sustaining steady sales and a loyal audience.
