Hi-C

Born in Louisiana, Hi-C grew up in Compton, California, where his sound steered clear of the confrontational gangsta rap style that defined the region. As he explained, ‘I’m into music first, messages later. I’m not hardcore and I don’t constantly say “black this” or “black that”’. He reached a national audience in 1990 with singles such as ‘I’m Not Your Puppet,’ which climbed the Billboard charts. Hi-C also appeared on screen in the films Encino Man, CB4 and South Central. In CB4 he supplied both the voice and the lyrics for the raps delivered by Chris Rock’s character. On his recordings he is supported by DJ Tony A, who comes from Wilmington, California.
