Ghanaian dancehall performer, actor, and producer Shatta Wale crafts tracks brimming with vigor, assurance, and swagger that have secured him numerous honors. Across the 2010s he independently distributed an array of albums, mixtapes, and singles, among them his emblematic 2014 release "Dancehall King." Those efforts drew the notice of Beyoncé, who included him alongside Major Lazer on "Already," a cut from her 2019 Grammy-nominated album The Lion King: The Gift that ultimately surpassed 200 million streams. His autobiographical Wonder Boy appeared that same year, while Maali arrived in 2023 as an atypically mellow project merging his dancehall approach with traditional African rhythms.

Born Charles Nii Armah Mensah, Jr. at Accra's Police Hospital in 1984, he grew up primarily under the guidance of his father—a prominent figure active in politics, business, and law—after his parents separated. Attendance at Seven Great Princes Academy in Dansoman sparked his interest in the performing arts, leading to a role in a production staged at the National Theatre of Ghana. After completing studies at Winneba Secondary School he turned to reggae and dancehall, shaped by repeated family visits to Jamaican relatives in the United Kingdom. Early recordings appeared under the name Doggy, later changed to Bandana for the 2004 Tinny collaboration "Moko Hoo," which earned a Ghana Music Award nomination. Though the track brought initial recognition, no comparable single followed, leaving his output throughout the subsequent decade largely confined to underground circles.

A 2014 comeback under the Shatta Wale name yielded both the Green Times mixtape and Answers: The Hybrid Album, the latter spotlighting the forceful "Dancehall King" that propelled him to Artist of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards. This turnaround opened doors to a part in Selorm Martinson, Jr.'s film Never Say Never, which debuted that September. Intent on building momentum, he delivered six full-length projects in 2015, four of them mixtapes: Up a Road, Times & Season, Million Miles, and Magical Year. The following year he shared the screen with Martha Ankomah in Ikechukwu Onyeka's Shattered Lives, then issued After the Storm, the debut album on his Shatta Movement Empire imprint. Willis Beatz produced the buoyant March 2017 single "Taking Over," a major hit uniting him with rising dancehall talents Captan, Addi Self, and Joint 77, while the October Cloud 9 EP ventured into hip-hop territory. Avance Media accordingly named him 2017's Most Influential Musician on Social Media.

The dramatic single "Ayoo" claimed Song of the Year at the first 3Music Awards in 2018, shortly before the premiere of Kejetia vs Makola: The Trial of Shatta Wale, which marked his initial starring film role. Later that year he partnered with Zylofon Music on the sleek, chart-oriented "My Level," a staple of his catalog, just ahead of Reign, a polished effort that reached the Top Ten of Billboard's Top World Albums Chart. In 2019, months before his pivotal Beyoncé appearance, he captured eight 3Music Awards, his largest single-ceremony total. After Wonder Boy came the early 2020 EP The Manacles of Shatta; he then became the first Ghanaian artist to stage a virtual concert amid the early COVID-19 outbreak. A 2022 collaboration with Accra hip-hop artist Medikal produced the Cross Roads EP, and the flowing Maali followed in 2023.
