Simon Webbe

Born on March 30, 1979, in Moss Side, a working-class district of Manchester, Simon Webbe explored music during childhood while also excelling as an amateur soccer player. He initially planned an athletic career until a severe injury struck in his early teens. Troubled relationships marked his teenage years, some of which later appeared in his songwriting, and one of them resulted in fatherhood by age 17. Turning those difficulties toward personal growth, Webbe entered modeling, an avenue that ultimately opened doors into music. Selected for the British boy band Blue, he achieved multi-million record sales while still in his early twenties. When the group’s run concluded, Webbe began mapping an independent path by 2005. That August his urban folk-tinged single “Lay Your Hands” reached the airwaves and climbed to number four on the U.K. singles chart. “No Worries” followed with the same peak position, setting the stage for his debut solo album, Sanctuary. Audiences were both surprised and drawn in by the record’s alternative, roots-oriented sound; although it entered at number 28, it soon rose to number seven. The eagerly awaited follow-up, Grace, arrived in November 2006 and reached number 11. Sustained popularity across Europe and Asia, paired with an active touring schedule, has allowed Webbe’s international profile to keep expanding.
