Biography
Simply Jeff, the West Coast DJ whose given name is Jeff Adachi, performed earlier under the alias DJ Spinn at Los Angeles stations such as KROQ and MARS-FM during the mid-'80s. He founded the progressive-leaning club night Funk-da-Fried Therapeutics, whose format let him blend chunky trip-hop and downtempo selections with trance and rave tracks in one evening. Early in the '90s he made his recording debut for Moonshine as X-Calibur alongside Brian Scott. After establishing the Orbit Transmission label, he issued further material from 1995 to 1996 both as X-Calibur and as the DJ's Project, a collaboration that included Scott, DJ Dan, and Scratchmaster DJ Rectangle. His first mix album, Funk-Da-Fried, appeared in 1997; a second volume followed the next year, and Funky Instrumentalist arrived in 2000. Occasional 12" singles emerged as well, together with later mixes such as Bring It Back (2005) and Electro Shock (2010).
