French trio Slift craft extended progressive epics that fuse metal ferocity with cosmic exploration. Their sound originated in the garage punk of early releases before expanding into elaborate, protracted structures dominated by psych-metal aggression. After intensive road work and mounting global recognition, the band issued its ambitious third album, ILION, through Sub Pop in 2024.

Brothers Jean and Remi Fossat launched Slift in Toulouse during 2016, with Jean handling guitar, vocals, and synthesizers, Remi on bass, and Canek Flores on drums. Initial recordings reflected psychedelic garage rock laced with science-fiction and space-rock elements, as heard on the 2017 EP Space Is the Key and the 2018 debut La Planète Inexplorée. The 2020 album Ummon signaled a decisive move toward heavier prog-metal territory. The group’s commanding stage presence drew notice when footage of its 2019 KEXP session at the Trans Musicales festival in Rennes circulated widely. In 2022 Slift made its first North American appearances at Desert Daze and Levitation, while Sub Pop simultaneously released a single culled from Ummon outtakes. The label followed with the January 2024 arrival of ILION, an eight-track set approaching eighty minutes that advanced the band’s dense, compositional psychedelic-metal direction.
