An emo four-piece based in Huntington Beach, California, Slow Coming Day consisted of Orion Walsh on vocals and guitar, Brad Smith on guitar, Dave Stoots on bass, and Jason Sheets on drums. The musicians formed the band in the opening months of 2001 while still in their late teens and promptly issued their self-released Part of Me Died EP that July. Songs by SCD appeared on multiple label compilations, among them Deep Elm’s influential Emo Diaries series, which soon led to a recording contract with the emo and Christian powerhouse Tooth & Nail. Farewell to the Familiar arrived on the imprint in late April. Ed Rose, whose credits include work with Get Up Kids and Appleseed Cast, produced the album, which contained newly recorded versions of tracks from the debut EP together with additional original material.
