Biography
U.K. singer-songwriter Sophie Jamieson has drawn attention through songs that lay bare private experiences with unflinching honesty. A series of mostly band-oriented EPs marked her arrival during the 2010s, yet her first full-length effort, Choosing, shifted toward leaner settings built around electric guitar or piano after she confronted struggles with alcohol addiction. That 2022 album preceded the 2025 release I still want to share, which expanded the sonic range through string sections alongside instruments such as Omnichord and harmonium under producer Guy Massey.
Residing in London, Jamieson began composing material during adolescence and later drew songwriting influence from Elena Tonra, Sharon Van Etten, and Scott Hutchison. Live performances began during her time in Cambridge amid the local university music community. The 2013 EP Where, produced by Ben Walker, earned a spot on Folkroom Records’ Anthology Two compilation, while the double-A-side single “Stain/Other” surfaced the following year. A problematic studio session and ensuing mental health crisis prompted a six-year hiatus from recording and performing.
Self-released efforts followed in 2020, opening with March’s hammer EP of atmospheric electric guitar and keyboard pieces typically supported by a rhythm section. The four-track release EP arrived that December in a comparably restrained manner. Jamieson reduced the instrumental density even further on her debut album, Choosing, whose material had been shaped by the highs and lows of her experiences with alcohol. Prior collaborator Steph Marziano handled production and engineering duties on the Bella Union release, which reached listeners in December 2022 alongside supporting dates for Willy Mason.
Jamieson’s second album, I still want to share, foregrounded recurring patterns of existence, affection, and grief upon its January 2025 arrival. Sessions took place in North London with Grammy-winning producer Guy Massey, whose credits include Spiritualized and Manic Street Preachers, and introduced elements such as twinkling Omnichord, harmonium, and sub-bass lines together with string arrangements by Josephine Stephenson and drumming by Ed Riman. The same month she began a headline U.K. tour.
