Biography
Ross Ryan from Denver operates under the StéLouse alias—pronounced “stay loose”—as a DJ and producer who fuses trap, EDM, and rock elements into the sound known as future bass. Early exposure to Metallica, Tool, AFI, and the Prodigy shaped his tastes, prompting him to join rock groups while still in high school. One such outfit, Boys, claimed victory in a 2011 Guitar Center competition that awarded an opening slot on Jane’s Addiction’s Nothing’s Shocking 20th anniversary tour along with $30,000. Ryan directed his portion of the winnings toward a laptop and software that launched his production career, then devoted the next several years to mastering electronic music techniques. He first shared remixes under the StéLouse name in 2013, followed in 2014 by the debut EP Home on Celldweller’s Subterra Records imprint and the more experimental The City EP later that year via Die High Records. Additional exposure arrived through 2014 and 2015 reworkings of Viceroy & Penguin Prison’s “The Life” and Rozes’ “R U Mine,” respectively, paving the way for a signing with Casablanca Records in early 2016. That same year brought collaborations with the Static Age’s Andrew Paley on “It’s Over,” with Nick Leng on “Been So Long,” and with Devault on “All I Need.” Ryan resurfaced in 2017 with the deep house-tinged “Lovers” and “Shivers N Gold,” the latter threading rock accents through its EDM structure. His self-titled album surfaced that May, emphasizing the more song-oriented dimension of his work. In 2018 the project was formally rechristened Stayloose, inaugurated by the single “Fight Back,” a Nevve collaboration that also marked his first Dim Mak Records release.
