Stitched Up Heart came together in 2010 as a goth metal unit whose heavy rock carried a lively punk drive. Multiple lineup changes followed their first EP before the band secured a contract with a major label, leading to the arrival of their debut full-length Never Alone in 2016. Their next album, Darkness, surfaced in 2020.

Based in Los Angeles, the project began that year when Alecia "Mixi" Demner assembled a new group after the original lineup dissolved. The early visual and sonic identity blended influences from Tokio Hotel and Paramore, producing an anime-goth aesthetic delivered through emo-styled vocals. That approach defined the 2012 self-released EP Escape the Nightmare, which contained the tracks "Dead Walkin'" and "Is This the Way to Get to Hell." Skeleton Key, the second EP, emerged two years afterward and intensified the music with thicker guitar riffs and aggressive screams, most evident on the singles "Grave" and "Frankenstein." The continued shift, now leaning toward Evanescence alongside In This Moment, extended into 2015 with the release of the atmospheric single "Finally Free," which also presented drummer James Decker, guitarist Merritt Goodwin, and bassist Randy Mathias along with a tighter overall sound and updated band image. Another Century Records soon signed the group, resulting in the June 2016 issuance of Never Alone. Built around downtuned guitars and forceful drums, the album reached the Top Ten on both the Billboard Heatseekers and Hard Rock charts. Once touring in support ended, the musicians returned to the studio.

In 2019 Stitched Up Heart issued the single "Lost," recorded with Godsmack frontman Sully Erna, and the song later appeared on their sophomore album Darkness.
