Biography
Seth Horvitz, a West Coast experimental techno producer, has issued recordings on several leading electronic imprints, among them Germany’s Force Inc and Mille Plateaux as well as California’s Drop Beat and Cytrax. His engagement with dance music originated during his early-’90s studies at Berkeley, after which he began working with electronics and performing as a DJ in 1992. Three years later he debuted on record with material included on the Swivel compilation released by Belief Systems, the local label linked to his own Context imprint. Subsequent releases appeared on other Bay Area labels such as Cytrax and Delay. In 1998 he issued the Influenza EP through Drop Beat, while the split album Deadpan Escapement, shared with Twerk and Safety Scissors, surfaced the same year on Belief Systems. During 1999 he recorded the Miasma EP for Force Inc and prepared his first full-length for Mille Plateaux; that album, Periods Make Sense, reached listeners in early 2000. He also supplied tracks to the first two volumes of Clicks + Cuts, contributed a pair of pieces to Theorem’s THX series, and released the “live” album Incest in 2002.
