Biography
Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, the hard rock outfit Sweet & Lynch revolves around the formidable abilities of vocalist Michael Sweet from Stryper and guitarist George Lynch, whose résumé includes Dokken and Lynch Mob. They fuse a powerful sonic approach with a spiritual undercurrent, launching their recording career via the 2015 release Only to Rise, whose emphasis on prominent guitar tones and robust production echoed the aesthetic of their 1980s efforts. Subsequent efforts Unified in 2017 and Heart & Sacrifice in 2023 adopted a more streamlined approach and sharper edge while retaining their allegiance to classic hard rock.
Frontiers Music president Serafino Perugino prompted the pairing by inviting Sweet to contribute his signature voice to sessions already underway with Lynch. What began as a studio collaboration evolved into a proper band once Sweet took on production duties and partnered with Lynch on songwriting. Completing the lineup were bassist James LoMenzo, formerly of Megadeth, White Lion, and Black Label Society, along with drummer Brian Tichy, previously with Whitesnake. Their first album, Only to Rise, arrived in January 2015, registering in the lower portion of the Billboard 200 while reaching number four on the Christian Albums chart and landing inside the top 20 on the U.S. Top Hard Rock Albums, U.S. Independent Albums, and U.S. Top Rock Albums tallies.
Returning to the studio, the group unveiled the single “Promised Land” online in July 2017 to widespread praise, accompanied by the initial installment of four documentary videos documenting the making of their second album. Issued that November, Unified peaked at number 53 on the U.S. Top Current Albums chart and number 13 on the U.S. Current Rock Albums survey. After a period of inactivity prompted by the principals’ separate commitments, Sweet and Lynch resumed planning a third album in 2022. Enlisting Alessandro Del Vecchio to co-produce alongside Sweet and to handle bass duties, the resulting Heart & Sacrifice featured drummer Jelly Cardarelli, whose prior credits include Adagio, Disconnected, and Lalu.
