Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers

Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers deliver hook-driven indie rock laced with grunge pop, blending rousing energy, confrontational edges, alienated moods, and empowering themes. The Australians came together in 2015 while still in their mid-teens as classmates in suburban Canberra, where Anna Ryan on vocals and guitar, Scarlett McKahey on lead guitar, Pip Gazard on keyboards, Jaida Stephenson on bass, and Neve van Boxsel on drums launched the project. Drawing from the riot grrrl movement along with Cherry Glazerr and Dream Wife, they issued the 2017 single “We’re All Henry,” then followed it in 2019 with the angsty track “I Like That You Like That,” which earned airplay on Triple J and secured appearances at Groovin’ the Moo and Falls Music & Arts Festival. Gazard soon departed, leaving the band as a quartet that continued releasing occasional singles until May 2022, when Domestic La La put out their first EP, Pretty Good for a Girl Band. The set contained “Miss Your Birthday,” a song co-written with Alex Lahey, by which point the group had begun touring internationally while also headlining dates across Australia.

Their debut full-length, the spirited I Love You, appeared on the same Domestic La La imprint in October 2023. Oscar Dawson, previously of Dukes of Windsor and a collaborator with Alex Lahey, handled production, and the album featured a duet with Melbourne trio the Gorgans. It entered the ARIA album chart at number six. McKahey stayed in the lineup but stepped away from live performances shortly before the release after receiving a POTS diagnosis.
