Biography
Jeannette Kantzalis served as the creative force guiding California’s Chubbies, handling songwriting, vocals, and guitar. Following several unsuccessful attempts to form a working group, she forwarded a batch of home-recorded solo demos to Long Gone John of Sympathy for the Record Industry. He responded favorably by releasing the group’s first 7" along with the 1995 album I’m the King. The Chubbies’ approach recalled the Muffs yet sounded noticeably rougher and more lo-fi, laced with sardonic wit alongside strong pop melodies. To support live dates, Kantzalis placed a classified ad and enlisted drummer Christene Kings, reducing the project to a duo. Early Sympathy releases set the template for an ongoing partnership that lasted through the band’s active years. Tres Flores arrived in 1997, and American Swagger followed three years later, with assorted singles and EPs appearing between them. By the time Swagger was issued in 2000, Kings had left, leaving Kantzalis to perform alone. She acknowledged the shift with a humorous triple-exposure portrait on the album cover. Kantzalis kept recording into the early 2000s, issuing material on Sympathy as well as smaller outlets such as Uncontrolled Pussy and Remedial, including the New Wave Boyfriends LP in May 2002.
