Emerging from the Orange County scene, the Confession stood apart from their metalcore contemporaries through the polished, classically honed singing of frontman and songwriter Taylor Holland Armstrong, along with the group’s fondness for extended, classic-rock guitar leads reminiscent of 1970s hard rock. Armstrong, alongside guitarists Kevin Fyfe and Jake Ortiz, bassist Matt Pauling, and drummer Jeff Veta, grew up in the coastal Los Angeles suburb of Dana Point and assembled the band there in 2005 while most of them were still attending high school. After working the regional club circuit, they caught the attention of Avenged Sevenfold, who selected the younger outfit as support on a lengthy national trek; that exposure secured a deal with the Record Collection imprint, a Warner Brothers–backed faux-indie outlet that issued the band’s quickly cut debut EP the same year. Additional roadwork followed, including a slot on the 2006 Taste of Chaos tour, after which Jake Ortiz departed and Justin Norman joined on guitar. In June 2007 the Confession issued their full-length album Requiem—produced by Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows—via Science Records and spent the summer on the Warped Tour.
