Norway's the Crest came together in 1996 out of the remnants of a sci-fi metal project named Crab. The group, much like Lacuna Coil and Theatre of Tragedy, focuses on melodic and moody goth metal—occasionally tagged as darkwave—that highlights the striking tension between heavy guitars and a female lead singer, in this instance the sweet-voiced Nell Sigland. After forming, the band spent several years unsigned, cycling through a series of musicians and cutting multiple demos before landing a contract with Seasons of Mist in 2001. Their first album, Letters from Fire, appeared the next year. When the band toured Europe behind shock-metal icon Mortiis, the lineup consisted of founding members Sigland on vocals and Kristian Aeon on guitar and keyboards, joined by Sebastian on guitar, Magnus on bass, and Klaus Blomvik on drums. Although Sigland was invited in 2004 to become a permanent member of Theatre of Tragedy, the arrangement has not prevented her continued work with the Crest, which released its second album, Vain City Chronicles, in mid-2005.
