Longtime Anathema bassist Duncan Patterson launched the Antimatter project after exiting the doom/death pioneers amid their shift into post-Floyd ambient rock territory. Teaming with guitarist Michael Moss, he pursued ethereal ambient alternative rock infused with electronics. The pair enlisted guest vocalists Michelle Richfield and Hayley Windsor for the 2001 debut Saviour, which also included a contribution from Patterson’s former Anathema bandmate Danny Cavanagh. Lights Out arrived the following year, and Planetary Confinement, leaning more acoustic, surfaced in 2005; Prophecy Productions handled all three releases in Germany while The End Records issued them in the United States. Patterson subsequently departed to focus on his Íon solo endeavor.

Moss kept Antimatter active by recruiting musicians who had played on the prior album for the fourth release, Leaving Eden, which emphasized electric guitars over the earlier ambient electronic approach. Prophecy Productions put the album out in June 2007, after which the band toured Europe through the remainder of the year. Moss and Patterson rejoined forces in 2008 for a tour drawing from both artists’ catalogs. The 2010 compilation Alternative Matter, collecting rarities, alternate mixes, and demos, appeared via Prophecy Productions. Fifth album Fear of a Unique Identity followed in 2012, incorporating sonic threads from all preceding works. Antimatter began tracking sixth album The Judas Table in April 2015. Early 2017 saw the release of the live album and DVD set Live Between the Earth and Clouds.
