Biography
The proposal from Frontier Records sparked the creation of melodic metal outfit the Dark Element, pairing ex-Sonata Arctica guitarist Jani Liimatainen with former Nightwish singer Anette Olzon for a collaborative project. Liimatainen started composing material for the band’s inaugural album during 2016. Remote collaboration between the two preceded the recruitment of bassist Jonas Kuhlberg and drummer Jani Hurula, who rounded out the lineup for the initial Dark Element release. Liimatainen and Olzon first encountered each other in person during filming for the lead single’s video, “My Sweet Mystery.” Featuring eleven tracks, the self-titled debut emerged in 2017 with Olzon’s melodic vocals complementing Liimatainen’s driving power chords. The follow-up effort, Songs the Night Sings, arrived in late 2019 via Frontiers Music and upheld the pair’s signature synth-infused sound, having been introduced by its rousing title track.
