Ayman Rostom launched his career in abstract hip-hop under the Dr. Zygote alias in the late 1990s before shifting toward house productions as the Maghreban in the mid-2010s. His house tracks mirror the experimental bent of his earlier work by subverting genre norms through unsteady rhythms, ethereal textures, a gritty lo-fi finish, and frequent use of Casio keyboards, while also weaving in elements from his Northern African roots alongside jazz and disco.

Born in Guildford, England, Rostom first connected with music through the early-1990s rave circuit. In 1995 he issued a pair of drum’n’bass 12"s on Juice Records under his given name. He soon pivoted to hip-hop, issuing his first Dr. Zygote album, Boot Breaks, via Boot Records in 1999. Shortly afterward he helped establish the crew Diversion Tactics, whose output began with the 2001 EP School Report and continued with the 2002 full-length Pubs, Drunks and Hip-Hop. He remained active with the group for the rest of the decade while also issuing occasional solo material, among them the 2006 vocal set Beats to Make You Frown—credited simply to Zygote—which showcased contributions from fellow crew members plus guests Tim Dog and Lewis Parker. Although noted for inventive sampling drawn from vintage television and film, he explored an entirely sample-free direction with the 2013 library-music tribute Grupo Zygote. Additional recognition arrived through his work in Strange U, a sci-fi hip-hop partnership with MC Obiesie Adibuah whose sound evoked both Dr. Octagon and Cannibal Ox.

Rostom had once characterized house music as devoid of soul and funk, yet exposure to artists such as Legowelt and I:Cube—courtesy of his friend Ben Williams, aka Gatto Fritto—combined with his growing enthusiasm for club dancing prompted him to begin crafting dance tracks. He adopted the moniker the Maghreban, a reference to someone of Northwest African descent, and from 2014 onward released material at a rapid pace on his own Zoot Records as well as on the French label Versatile Records, home to I:Cube and Pépé Bradock among others. In 2016 he placed two singles, “Brooklyn” and “Lose It,” on Black Acre. After the late-2017 release “Pots & Pans,” he joined the Belgian imprint R&S in 2018, beginning with a remix of Acid Mondays’ “Universal Rhythm.” His first album for the label, 01DEAS, followed and featured appearances by Gatto Fritto, California rapper A-F-R-O, and Zimbabwean vocalist Rutendo Machiridza.
