Biography
The Mayflies USA emerged during the 1990s as one of the more pop-focused acts from Chapel Hill’s lively North Carolina music community, a setting the group playfully distinguishes from any nonexistent Mayflies UK counterpart. Following an introductory EP issued in 1997, the band delivered its initial long-player in the first months of 1999 under the guidance of North Carolina alt-pop veteran Chris Stamey. That partnership made sense, given the shared enthusiasm both Stamey and the Mayflies USA held for British pop, power pop modeled on Big Star, and the ringing alternative pop-rock style long associated with Southern acts since the era of Stamey’s own work with the dB’s. The resulting record demonstrated polish and clear appeal for power pop enthusiasts, though reviewers noted uncertainty about whether the ensemble—featuring multiple songwriters and singers—would move beyond its evident influences toward a distinct identity. Pity List appeared in the autumn of 2000.
