Biography
Three Trapped Tigers channel the taut ferocity suggested by their name through rock’s visceral drive, improvisational liberty, and the looping patterns of electronica. Tom Rogerson, handling keyboards, electronics, and vocals, launched the project in London during 2007 alongside guitarist, synthesist, and electronics player Matt Calvert, drawing from the aesthetic of Aphex Twin and Autechre in an effort to translate the Warp Records sound into a live setting. The arrival of drummer and electronics performer Adam Betts completed the lineup. Working under the guidance of producer Gordon Raphael, known for his work with the Strokes, the group issued its debut recording in 2008, the straightforwardly named EP, whose tracks alternated between abrasive textures and tuneful passages within an electronic experimental-rock framework. A pair of further EPs appeared in 2009 and 2010, each pushing the trio deeper into the blend of art-rock, math-rock, and electro elements. The band expanded its scope in 2011 by delivering its first full-length album, Route One or Die. Following five years of nonstop live activity—undertaken both separately in side projects and together as a unit—while supporting The Dillinger Escape Plan and Deftones on tour, the musicians prepared their next set of songs with input from Brian Eno and Underworld’s Karl Hyde, resulting in the 2016 follow-up Silent Earthling.
