Jack Vanzet, an Australian graphic designer and visual artist, crafts melancholy downtempo instrumental electronic music as Thrupence. His tracks commonly incorporate hazy, crackling beats along with atmospheric samples drawn from vintage records. Attention first came his way through a series of conceptual mixtapes that he put out via Bandcamp, beginning with the Unfinished Business Tape during 2010. Serenade/Promenade arrived as the next mixtape in 2011. Vanzet then delivered the Voyages EP in the following year, in addition to the Thoughts mixtape. These outputs led to his signing with the Australian label Future Classic, which put out Lessons—a 17-track effort positioned as the fourth Thrupence mixtape—on vinyl during 2014. He performed alongside artists such as Shigeto and Flume, while also earning an ARIA Award for his design of the Bloom album cover by the Australian group RÜFÜS. Future Classic brought forth Thrupence's first official album, Ideas of Aesthetics, in 2017. Two tracks on this album included vocals from Vanzet's brother Edward, with another featuring singer/songwriter Wafia.
