Thy Catafalque emerged from Hungary as an avant-garde metal unit whose sound spans multiple heavy-metal subgenres, ranging from icy symphonic black and post-metal through regional folk, progressive, and experimental rock. Conceived by Makó native Tamás Kátai—a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, poet, and photographer—alongside longtime associate János Juhász, the project’s first outputs, 1999’s Sublunary Tragedies and 2001’s Microcosmos, drew primarily from black and post-metal. After Kátai settled in Edinburgh, Scotland, the music shifted toward broader experimentation that fused numerous disciplines, yielding a succession of notable works that includes the 2009 concept LP Róka Hasa Rádió, 2016’s largely symphonic Meta, and 2020’s trad-folk-leaning Naiv. In 2021 Kátai convened a rotating group of players for the band’s inaugural live appearance, preserved on the concert LP Mezolit: Live at Fekete Zaj. The ensemble’s deeply atmospheric twelfth studio album, XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek, appeared in 2024 and enlisted twenty musicians sourced from the Hungarian music scene.
