Biography
Toni Romiti delivers R&B in a hypnotic, downtempo style that contrasts sharply with her assertive stage presence and candid outlook. She first rose to prominence through social media while still in the early stages of college, ultimately abandoning a promising basketball trajectory once her track “Nothing on Me” gained widespread traction online. Born Antoinette Nicole Romiti-Coleman in 1995 to an Italian-American father who worked as a musician and an African-American mother, she spent her childhood in Chicago. Even as a young child she expressed a desire to sing, absorbing material by artists ranging from Michael Jackson and the Beatles to Britney Spears and Chris Brown, while also embracing the pop and EDM records her older siblings enjoyed. During her teenage years she began uploading cover versions to the internet and soon started composing and posting original songs.
Athletic talent also defined her high-school years, earning her a basketball scholarship to the University of South Carolina Upstate. She maintained her music pursuits alongside academics and cultivated a strong following on Vine. The 2014 viral spread of “Nothing on Me” led her to depart the university, set aside her athletic ambitions, and return to Chicago to concentrate on recording. Two self-released EPs appeared in succession, the second of which introduced the viral single “Imma Dog Too.” The track drew notice from figures such as Kylie Jenner, whose online endorsement helped establish Romiti as a rising act. Capitalizing on her expanding audience, she secured a deal with RCA and released her first major-label EP, Tomboy, in 2018; the project contained the singles “Never Thought” and “Options.”
