Tribo de Jah originated when four fully blind musicians joined forces with a fifth who retained limited sight in a single eye. The five first crossed paths as residents at Maranhão’s School for the Blind, where music lessons and instrument construction served as therapeutic activities. Once they began presenting live sets in São Luiz and surrounding towns across the state, radio personality Fauzi Beydoun discovered the ensemble, assumed lead-vocal duties, and extended crucial backing. Inspired by Maranhão’s robust reggae community, the musicians then composed original songs centered on social concerns while weaving in themes of peace, affection, and spiritual devotion. Their 1995 appearance at Jamaica’s Reggae Sunsplash Festival marked an early international milestone. Subsequent travels carried the group the length of Brazil, encompassing the 2001 Rock in Rio III Festival plus engagements at Rio’s Canecão and Metropolitan Halls and São Paulo’s Palace and Olimpia venues. Further dates took them to Buenos Aires, Caiena in French Guyana, France, and Italy, culminating in gold certification for their fourth album, Reggae na Estrada (1998).
