Biography
Emerging from the overlap of frosty post-punk and expansive, jittery indie rock, Truth Club crafts its material in Raleigh, North Carolina. The group first drew widespread notice with its debut album, Not an Exit, issued in 2019 on the regional Tiny Engines imprint. After shifting to the New York label Double Double Whammy, the band unveiled its sophomore effort, Running from the Chase, in 2023.
Longtime friends Travis Harrington on vocals and guitar and Elise Jaffe on drums founded Truth Club, bringing in bassist Kameron Vann for the quartet’s inaugural performance in 2017. The act completed a national tour even before issuing any recordings. Guitarist Yvonne Chazal joined during the sessions that produced the debut LP, and the lineup stabilized as a four-piece once the band signed to Tiny Engines.
Not an Exit appeared in May 2019, showcasing the group’s spare, taut aesthetic anchored by Harrington’s uneasy, inward-facing compositions. Reviewers responded favorably, placing the record on multiple year-end lists. In subsequent years Truth Club weathered the pandemic lockdown, refined its approach through greater collective songwriting and arranging, shared stages with Protomartyr and Duster, and deepened ties within the broader Carolinas music community. Working in Asheville under the guidance of Alex Farrar, the musicians finished Running from the Chase. Double Double Whammy released the standalone single “It’s Time” in early 2023, followed by the full album in October of that year, which included a contribution from fellow North Carolinian Indigo De Souza.
