Born in Flint, Michigan, Tunde Olaniran has always defied straightforward labels through a career that spans leading rock bands and electro-pop outfits, teaming with producers from both dance and hip-hop circles, and handling production duties on his own releases. The 2015 album Transgressor stands out in that body of work, showcasing a multi-octave vocal range that moves seamlessly from soulful crooning into smooth rapping. His sound fuses electronic beats and synthesizers alongside distorted guitars and unusual samples—he often weaves in non-musical elements like birdsong—while occasionally deploying the sharp-edged bass lines associated with U.K. grime. Above all, his assured, socially aware material champions personal freedom and defiance of norms, resonating especially with listeners who find themselves pushed to society’s edges. Strong grassroots buzz, a dynamic stage presence, and placement of one track in a television advertisement propelled Transgressor into breakthrough territory, widening Olaniran’s reach abroad ahead of the 2018 follow-up Stranger.

Olaniran’s early years reflected a broad cultural mix, as he lived in Germany, Nigeria, and England before settling back in Michigan during his teenage years. In 2003 he reached the final 15 of the inaugural Chicago Idol contest, which counted Kanye West among its attendees. He later started the rock band Taste This!, whose album Back for Seconds appeared in 2005. A solo effort, Infinite Modulation, came out independently the following year, after which he formed the electropop duo Stereoluxxx alongside Brian Preczewski; their self-released album Eros arrived in 2008. Later that same year he joined forces with CLP—the hip-hop venture of Berlin techno producers Chris de Luca and Phon.o—lending vocals to three tracks on the Supercontinental LP. Those sessions opened doors to repeated European tours and additional guest spots.

The First Transgression, the opening installment in a planned five-EP sequence, surfaced in 2011 and included the single “Cobra” together with a Chris de Luca remix. Late the next year The Second Transgression appeared, spotlighting “Brown Boy,” which subsequently received its own remix EP. The track also featured on the Yung Archetype EP, Olaniran’s first release for Michigan’s Quite Scientific Records. Opting not to extend the Transgression EP series, he instead named his next full-length Transgressor; Quite Scientific issued the album in August 2015, with guest contributions from Passalacqua, Invincible, and iRAWniQ. The resulting attention sparked extensive touring throughout Europe and the United States, marked by theatrical shows that incorporated vivid costumes and elaborate choreography. Following appearances on Flint Eastwood’s “Push” and Chris Bathgate’s “Low Hey,” Olaniran returned fully in 2018 with Stranger, his third proper studio album.
