Biography
Hailing from Sea Cliff, New York, Turnip King functions as a dream pop ensemble. Drawing on influences including Helium and Eric's Trip, the group fuses infectious indie pop hooks with its expansive, effects-saturated psychedelic explorations. Formed in 2011 by Lucia Arias, Cal Fish, Nick Kivien, and Christian Billard while the four were still high-school students, the band generated multiple online demos and its debut EP, Moon Landing?, through relentless basement rehearsals; Fire Talk issued that EP in 2013. Billard and Fish later enrolled at Bard College, after which Kivien exited to launch Sunflower Bean, yet Turnip King persisted with hundreds of shows across the New York area. Adding bassist Ken Winfield, the lineup tracked its first album, Laika, alongside engineer Ernie Indradat in Hoboken, New Jersey, and upstate New York, with Fire Talk releasing Laika in August of 2016.
